Code flags are a long-established method of signaling in the maritime world. They are used to signify the status or intentions of a vessel and in yacht and dinghy racing they denote start sequences, courses, and the class the yacht or dinghy is racing in.

Popular Code Flags and Meanings:
A - I have a diver down please pass at a slow speed
D - I am maneuvering with difficulty , please keep clear
F - I am disabled, communicate with me
O - Man Overboard
Q - My ship is healthy and I require free pratique (Customs flag - The yellow Q flag should be flown instead of the courtesy flag of the visited country until the yacht is properly cleared by customs and immigration, after which the Q flag is replaced by the courtesy flag)
Y - I am dragging my anchor
Code Flags for Yacht Racing:
B / Red Protest Flag - Indicates a protest by competitor in fleet racing
Q / Yellow Flag - Indicates that the boat flying it is taking a scoring penalty
